Easter Islander's Wooden Carvings of the Gods

Although they have been open to public inspection in the British Museum, the maori miro, or wooden carvings of the Easter Islanders have attracted singularly little attention considering their high artistic quality. These two reveal a knowledge of anatomy without parallel among primitive people. The custom of carving them is supposed by some to have been Melanesian in origin.
