Of
all the Severn Wonders of the Ancient World, the Hanging Gardens
of Babylon have left us least, in stone or story, wherewith
to build a picture of their beauty, but from what evidence there
is this lovely reconstruction has been produced. The gardens
have borrowed their shape from the Babylonian temple-tower :
trees and flowers mass every terrace, and a circling canal gives
coolness to the air. Inspired like so many mighty works of love,
they were built by King Nebuchadrezzar to delight the eyes of
his Median bride.
